Rights holder

Rights holders are used to define the creator or license holder of a File. In the overview, you can see all rights holders, their class and description. If the class column is empty, it means that this rights holder has no class and is most likely from older data. If this entry is updated, it needs to be changed to either Person or Group. When viewing a rights holder, you can see all files linked to it.

Form fields

  • Name - the name of the person or group

  • Class - can either be Person or Group (similar to CIDOC entities E21 Person and E74 Group). Note that this distinction is only used for internal organization and is not part of the CIDOC CRM model.

  • Info - a description or additional information about the person or group

Creator

The Creator (or Author) is the individual, group, or organization responsible for the intellectual or artistic production of the file. This role identifies the “maker” of the work. Regardless of who holds the current license, the creator remains the original source of the content.

For a deeper dive into the legal and conceptual definitions of authorship, see the Wikipedia entry on Authors.

License Holder

The License Holder is the entity that currently possesses the legal right to use, distribute, or grant permissions for the work. While the creator often starts as the license holder, these rights can be transferred to publishers, institutions, or other third parties.

You can find detailed explanations of how licensing works at the Creative Commons official site.
